Australia: Recent trends in and preparedness for extreme weather events

During the summer of 2012–2013, Australia experienced numerous extreme weather events: a heatwave, bushfires, and flooding associated with heavy rain and storm tides. Various other extreme weather events have also occurred during the last decade, including Cyclone Yasi in February 2011, the Queensland floods during 2010–2011, the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria in 2009 and the Canberra bushfires in 2003.
